Hal’s humour hacks – Part Two

In Part Two of our deep-dive with the ever-articulate Hal Cruttenden, the conversation takes a turn towards the profound, without ever losing its comic edge.

We ranged from politics to personal grief, from parenting to punchlines – and if Part One had you laughing, this one might just make you laugh and cry.

We dug into the idea of comedy as a coping mechanism, a pressure valve, and a way of reframing pain into something that lifts you. For Hal, humour isn’t just a performance – it’s a perspective. A way of saying, Yes, this hurts – but here’s why it’s also ridiculous.

What struck me throughout our chat was Hal’s ability to dance between hilarity and heartbreak with astonishing grace. His reflections on loss, loneliness, and even dating profiles (spoiler: everyone thinks they have a great sense of humour), are laced with that signature blend of honesty, humility, and, yes, hard-earned humour.

🚀 Highlights from Part Two include:

❤️‍🩹 Humour & Healing: Why the best jokes often come from our deepest wounds – and how Hal used laughter to process grief, divorce, and more.

🙃 Comic Reframes: From awkward dating bios to the absurdity of politics, Hal shows how reframing pain through comedy can shift your whole mindset.

🥁 The Rhythm of Funny: What Eric Morecambe taught Hal about timing, stillness, and the simplicity of the perfect gag.

🎙️ Authenticity on Stage: Hal’s advice to would-be speakers? Don’t fake funny. Be real. And if you’re naturally funny? Use it wisely – it’s a superpower.

From the Personal to the Political: We went deep into the world of modern politics, and why comics like Hal have more freedom to say the unsayable – without having to worry about party lines.

As someone who lives at the intersection of psychology and performance, I found myself nodding along to so much of what Hal said. Whether we were talking about Mark Thomas’s playfully poking people in power passion onstage or the gut-punch power of Life is Beautiful, the theme was clear: great comedy is about more than laughs – it’s about connection.

If you’ve ever wondered why some people can switch their mood with a single line, or how a great joke can completely change your perspective, you’ll want to hear this episode.

And if you want to see Hal’s mastery in action, don’t miss his brand-new live show Can Dish It Out But Can’t Take It – touring across the UK later this year. Expect sharp observations, big belly laughs, and a few surprisingly emotional moments thrown in for good measure.Tickets are on sale now: https://www.halcruttenden.com/live

Trust me – he’s even funnier live.

See you next Tuesday.

Warmest,
