I recently received some news that made me pause and, quite frankly, smile. I’ve been shortlisted for The Leadership Excellence Award for Individuals by the Institute of Leadership. Yes, I know, announcing this might sound like I’m tooting my own horn—so I’m aiming for a soft jazz tune rather than a vuvuzela blast. It’s an honour to be recognised among so many extraordinary leaders, but it’s got me reflecting on what real leadership excellence truly means.
The recognition isn’t just for me; it’s a testament to the collective work of all the brilliant people who have shaped, challenged, and sometimes flat-out laughed at my ideas along the way. Leadership, in my humble opinion, isn’t about standing in the spotlight—it’s about shining it on others so they can see their own brilliance.
So, in true Humourology fashion, I’m going to share what this nomination really means to me, and more importantly, to anyone looking to lead with a dash of levity and a healthy dose of humility.
Leadership Is a Laughing Matter
The Humourology ethos is built on the understanding that humour and humanity are intertwined in effective leadership. But don’t get me wrong—this doesn’t mean running board meetings like a stand-up show or throwing punchlines instead of quarterly projections (although that would certainly be more entertaining). It’s about the art of connecting with people in a way that’s authentic, inclusive, and, dare I say, a bit fun.
When I reflect on the people I’ve been privileged to coach, train, and share laughs with, I realise that what elevates any leader isn’t the title or the accolades. It’s the ability to take the work seriously without taking yourself too seriously. Leadership excellence is knowing when to encourage a belly laugh and when to lend a shoulder. It’s leading with a light touch but making an impact that’s profoundly felt.
Three Key Takeaways for Leading with Levity
- Create an Inclusive Atmosphere
Humour can be a great leveller. When leaders show their authentic, sometimes silly selves, they create an environment where everyone feels comfortable contributing. This leads to open dialogue, creative problem-solving, and a culture of collaboration. - Be Present and Engaged
Leaders who use humour are more likely to stay present in the moment and encourage others to do the same. This presence fosters a sense of genuine interest and respect in conversations. If you can listen as well as you laugh, you’ll find that people open up and trust you more. And trust, as we all know, is the foundation of effective leadership. - Use Humour to Defuse Tension
Let’s face it—leadership isn’t always a walk in the park. There will be pressure, deadlines, and the occasional moments when things go pear-shaped. Humour can help lighten the mood, put challenges in perspective, and, most importantly, allow teams to move past obstacles with grace and a grin.
A Nod of Gratitude
Receiving the news of my nomination was both humbling and a little surreal. It made me realise that while accolades are lovely, they’re just a reflection of a journey shared with others. I am grateful to be considered, but more than that, I’m grateful for the people who keep me on my toes, teach me new things every day, and, yes, laugh with me (and occasionally at me).
To my fellow nominees, congratulations! It’s an honour to be in your company, and I’m looking forward to the celebration, camaraderie, and perhaps even a chuckle or two at the awards ceremony. After all, if leadership excellence is worth anything, it’s worth a smile.
So here’s to leadership that’s not about standing taller (fortunately!) but about standing together. And if we can throw in a joke or two along the way, so much the better.
Humourology Tip: When it comes to leadership, laughter is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. So, lead with purpose, manage with humour, and always find time to share a smile.
See you next Tuesday.
Warmest,
Paul x
