Welcome to Season Eight of the Humourology Podcast.
And what a way to begin.
My first guest of Season Eight is someone who needs no introduction, but absolutely deserves a proper conversation: Angela Rippon.
Angela and I have known each other for years through charity events and shared causes, but this was the first time we had the chance to sit down together, unhurried, and really talk. Not the polite hello in a crowded room. Not the quick catch-up between speeches. But an in-depth hour of conversation.
It was, quite simply, wonderful.
Spending time with Angela is an object lesson in energy. She radiates enthusiasm, curiosity and warmth. She listens. She laughs easily. And she brings a sense of lightness to serious subjects without ever diminishing them. That combination, I would argue, is one of the reasons she has enjoyed such extraordinary longevity in broadcasting.
We talked about everything from that iconic Morecambe and Wise moment, which still makes people smile decades on, to why humour has quietly underpinned her entire career. Not humour as performance, but humour as perspective. As a way of staying human under pressure. As a way of connecting rather than posturing.
Angela is very clear about this: humour is not an optional extra. It is part of how she has stayed grounded, curious and engaged for more than half a century in the public eye.
That matters.
In Humourology terms, Angela is a master of what I would call relaxed authority. She does not need to dominate a room to lead it. She brings people with her. And humour plays a huge part in that. A shared laugh lowers threat, builds trust and reminds us that we are allowed to enjoy ourselves, even when the subject matter is important.
That ease does not come from taking life lightly. It comes from understanding it deeply.
We also talked about energy. Real energy, not forced perkiness. The kind that comes from movement, curiosity and staying involved in the world rather than withdrawing from it. Angela is living proof that enthusiasm is a practice, not a personality trait.
Which brings us, briefly, to dance. 💃🏼
Angela is the founder of Let’s Dance, a national initiative built on a simple but powerful idea: movement has the ability to transform lives. Inspired by her own reconnection with dance on Strictly Come Dancing, the campaign encourages people of all ages to move more, in whatever way feels joyful and accessible to them.
The key word there is joy.
Let’s Dance is not about perfection or performance. It is about connection, wellbeing and confidence. And fittingly, Sunday 8 March 2026 will be the National Day of Dance, with dance teachers, community groups and individuals across the country encouraged to take part in whatever way suits them. If that piques your interest, you can find out more at their website above.
But back to the podcast.
What stayed with me most after recording this episode was how much Angela laughs. At herself. At life. At the absurdities we all encounter if we are paying attention. That capacity to laugh without cynicism is rare, and it is powerful.
Humour, when used well, is not about being flippant. It is about flexibility. About staying open rather than rigid. And Angela Rippon embodies that better than almost anyone I have met.
This episode is full of warmth, insight and genuine laughter. It is also a reminder that curiosity keeps us young, movement keeps us energised, and humour keeps us connected.
Which feels like a pretty good way to open a new season.

Season Eight of the Humourology Podcast begins with Angela Rippon. A legend. A joy. And, as you will hear, a right laugh.
Enjoy.
See you next Tuesday.
Warmest,
Paul x
