Forget Resolutions: This Is How to Have Your Best Year Yet

Take a moment—yes, right now—to imagine it’s December 31st, 2025. You’re looking back on a brilliant year. What are you smiling about?

As we tiptoe towards the end of 2024 and get ready to sing Auld Lang Syne, it’s natural to think about what the next 12 months might hold. For many, that means a well-worn list of resolutions—usually abandoned by the end of January. But this year, let’s try something different: let’s reverse-engineer 2025 and fill it with moments of joy, connection, and, of course, laughter.

Take a moment—yes, right now—to imagine it’s December 31st, 2025. You’re looking back on a brilliant year. What are you smiling about?

Did you share belly-aching laughs with friends over long dinners? Did you finally tick off something from your bucket list? Maybe you stepped out of your comfort zone, embraced life with a little more humour, and found yourself seeing the funny side of things that might’ve once annoyed you.
That’s the magic of reverse engineering: when we visualise where we want to be, the path forward becomes clearer.

Here are three Humourology-inspired tips to make 2025 a year full of smiles:

  1. Collect Moments, Not Frustrations
We can’t control what happens, but we can choose how we respond. Take a tip from comedians: they find humour in the mundane and even in the mistakes. Life’s mishaps are often its best stories—so start seeing them as material, not misery.
  2. Be the Friend You’d Like to Have
Imagine your December 2025 self surrounded by people you love—those who make you laugh and remind you not to take life too seriously. Friendships thrive when you bring your best self to the table: open, curious, and willing to laugh at your own flaws.
  3. Choose to Chase the Chuckles
You’ll never regret seeking out joy. Whether that’s finally starting that creative project, watching stand-up comedy more often, or just dancing badly in your kitchen, life’s too short not to actively pursue the things that make you happy.

If you imagine these things already completed, you’ll start the year smiling—knowing the laughs, love, and success are all in your grasp.

So, here’s to 2025: Make your dreams come alive and your face ache with laughter.

PS: I’ll be seeing in the New Year as I always do—grabbing every ounce of joy and laughter I can with my old mate Ainsley Harriott. Wherever you are, I hope you’ll raise a glass, share a chuckle, and toast to all the joy that 2025 has to offer!
